As mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus spread through the United States, parents have been searching for a non-toxic product to protect their children.

Summer time is mosquito time. After the West Nile Virus first made its appearance in the United States, parents’ concern about protecting their child against mosquito bites has increased. Chemical-laden insect repellents work well but come with strong warnings about possible health effects. Bug Bam has created a product for these chemical-conscious parents, the mosquito repelling wristband.

Bug Bam Information

Bug Bam was created by Australian entrepreneur Joseph M. Symond in 1998. The formula was perfected in 2004 and the Bug Bam brand was launched. Bug Bam’s mosquito repelling formula is DEET free and contains no harmful chemicals. According to the Bug Bam website, Bug Bam “is the ONLY brand of 100% natural repellent that has been scientifically tested and proven to work by the #1 entomology labs in both Australia and the USA!”

Mosquito Repelling Wristband

The Bug Bam mosquito repelling bracelet looks like other popular theme-based silicone bracelets and comes in two sizes: kids and a one size fits all option. The bracelets are waterproof and are perfect to wear while in the pool or at the lake, areas where mosquitoes are frequently seen. Due to the comfortable material of the Bug Bam bracelet, it is easy to convince children to wear one.

The bracelet does have a very distinct smell, it doesn’t stink but when the bracelet is first opened, the smell is quite strong. The purpose of the strong smell is to hide the human odor and instead convince mosquitoes that the person wearing the Bug Bam is a plant by emulating a plant smell. Those who are sensitive to smells may find that the scent of the bracelet is too strong but may grow accustomed to the odor after a bit of time.

Insect Repelling Grid

In addition to the mosquito repelling wristband, Bug Bam also sells a DEET-free and non toxic insect repelling grid. The purpose of the grid is to replace citronella candles, electrical bug zappers or other products that are intended to keep bugs out of an area. Hanging the grid on a patio will keep insects away without the danger of a flame or electrical cord.

Where to Buy Bug Bam

Bug Bam’s product line is available at Wal-Mart, Walgreen’s, from the Leaps and Bounds catalog and online at the Bug Bam website. Wristbands are $3.99 each and combo packages can be purchased which include multiple wristbands as well as insect repelling grids.

The Bug Bam for Kids products are a great way for parents to protect their children from the dangers of mosquitoes without resorting to harmful chemicals.
